This is a great program for roller hockey players who want to learn how to play competitive ice hockey.

Annual registration and Jack Adams ice runs only $300 for Detroit Dragons players. The learn to skate & play program (i-Program) includes full equipment and ice time for the entire season for only $180.

The Detroit Hockey Squirts and Peewees are wrapping up a bruising Spring Season at Eddie Edgar Arena in Livonia.

Meanwhile the DHA has made its end of season plans.

We have come to the end of the season many have stopped practicing and playing games and those who have not will be soon. This year we have decided once again to go with a more relaxed atmosphere for our end of the season event/awards ceremony. We will be having a barbeque! This barbeque will take place on Saturday May 21, 2011 from 12pm-5pm. This will be a fun filled day! It will begin with the I-Program having a game time to be announced and our other teams participating in kids vs. coaches games the time of these games will also be announced later. We will also have an awards ceremony and lets don’t forget about the food!

End of the Season Barbeque/ Awards Ceremony
Will take place on Saturday May 21, 2011 from 12pm-5pm. We are asking that each family donates some meat for the grill i.e. hot dogs, hamburgers, buns, etc. all side items will be provided by the DHA for the picnic. Cynthia will be taking donations starting this Saturday, through Tuesday, May 18, 2011.

I-Program Update:
All I-Program players should be in attendance for the next few weeks. We will be having player evaluations were Saturday (May 7th) and next Saturday (May 14th). It is important that all players are evaluated especially since some players are eligible to move up to a team next season. So please make sure all players are there! We also will have a few young men coming out for the next two Saturdays to run a skating clinic with the I-Program so you want to make sure your players take advantage of this!

Last Day of Skating:
Our last day of skating for this season is Saturday, May 21, 2011 this is also the day of our barbeque. The ice will be taken down after this date we do not have ice at this arena over the summer. We will be back for next season sometime after Labor Day. So over the summer please check your emails and mailboxes for our start dates.
FYI: There are some ice arenas that do maintain their ice during the summer months where you can take your player to skate (Dearborn, Livonia, Farmington, Southfield, etc.) and we encourage you to do so.

Equipment Return:
Equipment can be returned on Saturday, May 21, 2011 and Tuesday, May 24, 2011. I-Program players need to return all equipment that was given to them. Please return this equipment clean!!!

Past Due Fees:
If you owe any fees they are past due and must be paid as soon as possible. Anyone with a balance from this season will not be allowed to register for next season owing an outstanding balance. This balance will need to be paid first. So if you have any outstanding fees please make arrangements to pay these fees as soon as possible.

Early Registration:
We will once again be offering an early registration discount for the competitive teams only! There will be a $50.00 discount offered for those who pay in full and register now thru July 31, 2011. After July 31, 2011 we will offer a $25.00 discount from August 1, 2011-September 1, 2011. Regular fees will apply after September 1, 2011. So save yourself some extra money and register your player early.
FYI: Please check your email and mail boxes for upcoming fundraiser we will have to help with your fees as well.

DHA Parent Party Fundraiser:
We are planning a fundraiser for the organization. We are planning a night out for the parents which we think you all well deserve but at the same time will help us raise some money for our association. We really need all your support! Please look for more information regarding this in the next few days!

ABC Day Camp Registration:
If you are looking for a camp for your child for the summer then look no further. Our own recreation center (Butzel) will have a camp for the summer. Registration for this camp takes place on Saturday, May 14, 2011 on Belle Isle at the casino. The camp is from 8am-5pm M-F and runs between 8-10 weeks. The cost is $300 for 3-5 year olds and $400 for 6-12 year olds. For more information see one of the center staff.

WASHINGTON — When he broke the National Hockey League's color barrier with the Boston Bruins in 1958, Willie O'Ree heard all sorts of myths about why there were so few black hockey players.

"People were saying that blacks had weak ankles and weak knees. It's crazy when you hear things like that," said O'Ree, now 75, who's the NHL's director of youth development and ambassador for the league's "Hockey Is for Everyone" initiative. "I don't hear too much of that now."

These days, O'Ree hears about growth in the number of blacks in hockey in nearly all areas of the game, from the NHL to the broadcast booth to community rinks.

The NHL has more than 20 black players on team rosters this season, an all-time high. The Atlanta Thrashers alone boast five black players — defensemen Dustin Byfuglien and Johnny Oduya and forwards Evander Kane, Anthony Stewart and Nigel Dawes — another record. The Thrashers have four other black players in their minor league and draft systems.

"It's definitely something I've never been a part of before, and it just shows the direction hockey is going," Kane, the Thrashers' 2009 first-round draft pick, told NHL.com.

In addition, dozens of minority-oriented youth hockey programs across the United States — from Ice Hockey in Harlem to Washington's Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club to GOALS of Anaheim, Calif. — have been exposing kids to the game for decades, supplying gear and rink time to those who can't afford it.

Another program, the Detroit Hockey Association, hosts an annual "Hockey in the Hood" tournament during Black History Month that attracts minority youth hockey teams from across the country.

For the third year in a row, the Detroit Hockey Association teams did not have access to their home ice until November. In both 2008 and 2009, power outages, aging compressors, and repair work put the Detroit Dragons Teams' seasons in jeopardy.

Thankfully, the story is different this season. The City of Detroit has made an investment in the future of hockey and figure skating in the city. Over the summer and into September, new compressors were installed. We trust this will be the last year in the foreseeable future that the Detroit Hockey Association will be waiting for the week of Thanksgiving to get back on the ice.

The Detroit Dragons Squirt B will kick off its season on Tuesday, November 23rd at 6:00 PM. The i-program (learn to skate) will begin on Saturday, December 4th at 10:00 AM. All ages are welcome.

The Detroit Hockey Association 2009-2010 end of season event was held on Saturday, April 24, 2010. We did something a little different from the traditional banquet. This year the DHA had a Family Skate/Barbeque at Jack Adams Arena. It was a great way to mingle and share some family time.

DETROIT -- It will be a homecoming for Rochester Institute of Technology sophomore, forward, Cameron Burt. The NCAA Men’s Frozen Four will be held at Ford Field and RIT will be making their first appearance in the championships against Wisconsin, on Thursday at 5:00 PM. The game will be broadcast on ESPN. Miami and Boston College will square off in the other semi-final at 8:30 PM.

This will be the sixth time Detroit has hosted the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Championships. But this will also be a first for Ford Field. These will be the first sanctioned hockey game ever to be played in the stadium.

Burt, RIT’s leading scorer (16-31-47), got his first taste of travel hockey at Jack Adams Arena, playing in the Detroit Hockey Association. The Detroit PSL (CMA) graduate went on to play for the Green Bay Gamblers in the USHL for his elite junior experience.

Burt’s success is a testimonial to the vision of the pioneers in Detroit hockey. The Detroit Recreation Department was always at the forefront. Hockey support from names like Ilitch, Adray and Karmanos helped. The Great Lakes Invitational Tournament at Christmas time is part of the historical fabric of college hockey. The late Don Canham was such a tremendous advocate for the college game.

From St. Clair Shores to Trenton and all around Metro Detroit, no one can argue….This is Hockeytown. There is even an adjacent Hockeytown Café and former University of Wisconsin star Chris Chelios has a tavern that is very short walk from Ford Field. Also, close to Ford Field is the very ethnic Greektown area.

The DHA has had a storied tradition of producing college players for well over 60 years.

The National Hockey League has recently put money and energy to promote diversity. It was 52 years ago that Willie O’Ree played for the Boston Bruins and became the first black man to make his mark in the NHL. O’Ree, now 74 heads up the NHL’s inner-city and ethnic neighborhood program to develop hockey interest in urban areas.

This is the 12th year for the NHL plan. O’Ree said, "These programs are working, we started in four cities and are now in 40 locations throughout the States and Canada." He added, "Every boy or girl has natural ability, they just need the opportunity. All groups just need to get exposed to hockey."

As a hockey diplomat, George Gund, former San Jose Shark’s owner who underwrote the Krakow Film Festival, ultimately helped get an outdoor rink built near Zakopane, Poland.

The NCAA has always had an ambassadorial approach in hockey. Successful effort is rewarded, regardless of background. The University of Michigan and Michigan State always embraced minorities. Former Michigan coach Al Renfrew said, "Just look to Mel Wakabayashi as an example." As he referred to his All-America center on his 1964NCAA Champion team.

The late "Godfather" of hockey in Minnesota, John Mariucci, echoed similar thoughts when he coached the Gophers. At any speaking engagement he would rally the hockey cause by saying, "Anyone can play hockey at an elite level if given the chance, and we just need 10,000 rinks." His belief and determination that everyone has a right to play hockey, including women, was reinforced by the recent Olympic medal success. Walter Bush encouraged diversity and USA Hockey carries that vision on an inter-national level today.

The City of Detroit has had a surge of new hockey interest. Besides the Detroit Jack Adams indoor rink, the Detroit Clark Park outdoor rink has benefitted from the NHL program. Each February, the DHA hosts a national invitational tournament as part of Hockey Day in Michigan titled "Hockey in the Hood".

On Friday, April 9, the area will be rocking as it is the home opener for the Detroit Tiger’s at adjacent Comerica Park. At 5:00 PM, there will be a NCAA player’s skill contest at Ford Field. Wayne State Warrior, Lindsey Park will participate. Then the Hobey Baker Award will be announced at Ford Field.

On April 10, as part of the Frozen Four, USA Hockey will be hosting a Level III Coaches Clinic at the Ren-Cen. Pre-Registration is required. Also, during the April 8-10, NCAA Finals, the CCHA is hosting a free Fan Fest at the GM Winter Garden, also in the Ren-Cen.

As a legacy project, the NCAA has instituted a book drive. Partnered with the Detroit Local Organizing Committee and the Detroit Public Schools Foundation, the Frozen Four will have deposit locations for new or gently used books at Ford Field -Gates A, B or G and the Marriott Renaissance Hotel lobby and GM Winter Garden.

The popular NCAA Yes-Clinic presented by the college coaches has been eliminated this year.

It is very appropriate that Burt will be center stage. He has earned his accolades. No player is as hot as Cameron Burt. He has 11 points in his last six games. He had the game winner in the 2-1, NCAA Regional victory over Denver. RIT coach Wayne Wilson brags about him saying, "He has great offensive instincts and is smart with the puck. Right now, he is our go-to guy."

Wisconsin has the history, winning two NCAA titles in Detroit previously. RIT is the hot team, winning their last 12 games. Wisconsin will probably have the most support in the stadium. Cameron Burt will get the most enthusiastic reaction. Home grown !!!!!!!

The CCHA and the Detroit Sports Organization get applause for their efforts. Most important, a great big Thank You is in order to all the Hockey Dad’s and Hockey Mom’s, of Metro Detroit. PAST and PRESENT!!!! All in all, HOCKEY gets the victory.

Detroit Hockey Association alum Cameron Burt named Atlantic Hockey Association player of the month for February

ROCHESTER, NY - Sophomore forward Cameron Burt (Detroit, MI) of the RIT men's hockey team was named the Atlantic Hockey Association Player of the Month of February on Tuesday. It is Burt's first monthly honor as a member of the Tigers. He was a two-time AHA Rookie of the Week last season.

Burt led the Tigers to a 7-1 mark in February, recording 15 points (2-13-15) in eight games. He also had six multiple-point efforts and 10 power-play points. [more]

Men's hockey advances to NCAA Tournament after defeating Sacred Heart in the AHA Championship
ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men’s hockey team (26-11-1) won its first Atlantic Hockey Association Championship in resounding fashion, defeating second-seeded Sacred Heart (21-13-4), 6-1 before 3,298 fans at Blue Cross Arena on Saturday. How about RIP, for the remains from the carnage that has been created in the first two days of the 2010 NCAA hockey tournament?

Quick show of hands: Who had the Rochester Institute of Technology advancing to the Frozen Four? A better question might be how many of you knew RIT played Division I hockey?

But the prize of another weekend of hockey was exactly the reward on Saturday night as the No. 4 Tigers (No. 15 overall in a 16-team field) breezed by No. 3 New Hampshire 6-2 to win the East Regional in front of 3,737 at the Times Union Center. RIT became the first Atlantic Hockey Association team to advance to a Frozen Four. [more]

Hockey in the Hood produces thrilling finals games

It’s clear Hockey In The Hood’s competition level is on the rise.

The sixth annual tournament, which has featured minority-based teams and organizations in its first five editions, included a new twist this year.

The tournament, which was held at northwest Detroit’s Jack Adams Arena and southwest Detroit’s Clark Park Feb. 12-14, also featured teams from suburban Detroit. The Squirt B Livonia Bruins, Pee Wee B Farmington Hills Bulldogs, the Pee Wee B Royal Oak IceDogs, Midget B Livonia Blackhawks and the Midget B Plymouth Sharks all participated in the tournament. They joined teams from the Detroit Hockey Association, Clark Park Coalition, Columbus Ice Hockey Club, Hasek’s Heroes (Buffalo) and the Wasilla Hockey Association (Alaska). Usual participant the Fort DuPont Hockey Club (Washington, D.C.) was scheduled to attend but couldn’t get out of Washington because of the excessive snow that has hit that area recently.

The competition produced four spectacularly entertaining championship games Sunday.

The Livonia Bruins won the Squirt championship with a 5-4 win over Columbus, thanks to Brendan Preiss’ shorthanded goal with 1:24 left that broke a 4-4 tie. The Bruins took another penalty with 1:02 left and fought off Columbus’ six-on-three attempt to tie the game with its goaltender pulled as time ran out.

The Farmington Hills Bulldogs and Hasek’s Heroes then upped the drama ante as Farmington Hills won 5-4 in overtime. Matthew Downey drove a one-time slap shot from the high slot past the goaltender (who wore No. 39, like the goalie who the organization was named after), with Kent Jackson doing his Tomas Holmstrom imitation by creating a screen in front of the net, 4:49 into the extra period to give the Bulldogs the win.

Hasek’s Heroes then got its revenge in the Bantam title game as it scored in the last two minutes for a 5-4 win over the Detroit Hockey Association’s Dragons.

The Plymouth Sharks then put an exclamation point on the thrilling afternoon of hockey by scoring with 49 seconds left in regulation for a 3-2 win over the Dragons.

Columbus beat Detroit 4-3 in the Mite title game the previous day.

"I think it was one of our most successful tournaments," tournament director and Detroit Hockey Association president Will McCants said, "because of the notoriety created by the suburban teams participating and those teams bringing up the skill level."

It was a positive experience for the suburban-Detroit teams.

"This was a great tournament. This is really nice," said Livonia Blackhawks’ coach Bill Sullivan, who coached in the Detroit Hockey Association for many years. "The kids got to experience a little diversity and they enjoyed it."

Preiss enjoyed the experience. "I learned about good sportsmanship and about other people," he said.

The tournament was also different for Detroit Hockey Association players.

"It (competition) is tougher," said DHA Midget player Kiernan Babcock. "Bringing in the local teams made it a little harder for us and because the other teams are getting better."

McCants isn’t bemoaning the fact that the Dragons didn’t win a Willie O’Ree Trophy, which goes to the champion of each division.

"It’s better for me, from the tournament point of view, to see other teams win it," he said. "That gives the tournament more notoriety and it makes us more determined."

O’Ree, the NHL’s first black player, was on hand as usual. "This weekend has generated much more enthusiasm than past tournaments," he said. "Just an awareness of the kids of what’s going on."

Devon Fields, in particular, enjoyed the tournament. Now a coach with the Squirt AA Farmington Hills Fire, Fields grew up playing at Jack Adams Arena for Detroit Hockey Association Dragons’ teams. And this year’s tournament brought him back to the days when the DHA was thriving.

"This makes me think back to the times when every weekend was like this" – busy, with a lot of games going on, he said. "It’s a beautiful thing for Detroit to get a chance to experience it."

But there was one negative for McCants: The absence of the Fort DuPont Hockey Club and its president and founder, Neal Henderson, who co-founded Hockey In The Hood with McCants in 2005.

"I really feel bad. It’s a slight damper on the tournament," McCants said.

The DHA president also thanked the sponsors who made the tournament possible: The Detroit Recreation Department, State Farm Agent Anthony Jackson, Wal-Mart, Frito Lay and the Red Wings.

The Detroit Dragons Midget B Team has brought home another VICTORY The 2009-2010 LCAHL Champions. This has been a Cinderella story that has paid off BIG for this team with a late start in the the season and back to back games with nothing but one practice in the season and to end the year with not just one trophy but two. The LCAHL 2009-2010 Championship trophy and the MAHA 2009-2010 District 2 Midget B runners up trophy, These boy's have Heart and with shear determination would not let anything stand in their way. With their great coaching staff: Head Coach Al Alexander, Asst. Will McCants, Asst. Coach Steve Kolbicz, Asst. Coach John Kelly and Managers Marilyn Alexander and Becki Kolbicz. not to mention their supportive parents, without them these trophies would not be possible.

The Detroit Hockey association will host Hockey in the Hood at Jack Adams once again from February 12 - 14. This year will also feature select "winter classic" games outside at Clark Park. Teams from Columbus, Ohio; Detroit, MI; Buffalo, NY; Wasilla, AK, and metro Detroit will participate. The guest of honor, Willie O'Ree will travel from his home in San Diego, CA.

Detroit Mite Winter Classic in Clark Park to be rescheduled

Due to another power outage and melting ice at Jack Adams arena this Tuesday, the first annual Mite Winter Classic at Clark Park will need to be rescheduled for another date.

Tuesday's originally scheduled regular season ending game with Garden City will be played at Jack Adams Arena at 12:30 PM on Saturday, January 9th instead.

DHA mite, squirt, and pee wee teams will be competing in Columbus Ohio this weekend. This Thanksgiving Invitational tournament is hosted by The Columbus Ice Hockey Club. Teams from this program have attended the last four Hockey in the Hood tournaments at Jack Adams Arena in Detroit.

We have great news!!! We will have ice as of Monday, November 23, 2009 and our zamboni is back!!!!!!

*The I-Program will have practice this Monday from 6:00pm-7:30pm and then will resume there normal every Saturday Schedule after the Thanksgiving holiday.

ARENA & CENTER CLOSED FOR THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY NOVEMBER 26-28, 2009!!!!!!

Registration:
We are still registering for our competitive teams as well as our Learn to Skate program (I-Program). The fees are: Competitive Teams $300.00 registration fee (*this does not include your referee fees or team fees) and $150.00 for the I-Program. Looking for all level of players Mite- Midget as well as new skaters for our I-Program. Please remember at the time of registration 1/2 of your fees are due.
Please keep in mind that all association fees are due by November 30, 2009. Anyone owing any fees after November 30, 2009 will not be allowed to participate in any DHA activities this includes practices and games. We have several fundraiser that will be going on to help you earn money for these fees.

Fundraiser:
We are currently doing the Coney Island Kit Fundraiser. The kits sell for $20.00 and you make a $6.00 profit off of each kit sold. The order forms and money are due to Becki on December 5, 2009 and the delivery and pick up date for your kits is December 15, 2009. (*order forms are available at the arena) Please look for more information on upcoming fundraiser's.

We are also doing the White Castle Coupon book these books sell $5.00 each and have some really great deals. If you haven't received your White Castle coupon books or info please contact Becki at poohbear2273@yahoo.com.

*Don't forget to support the Bantam and Midgets Bowling fundraiser on December 14, 2009 @ 7pm Vision's Lane (Ford Rd in Westland). Please see one of your Bantam or Midgets team members for more information.

I hope everyone is as anxious and excited as I am about the upcoming season!!!

Parent Meeting:
As you all know there have been many changes going in our city. Some of those changes may affect us. We are having a very important meeting for all parents to attend to find what's new any changes regarding our upcoming season. This meeting will take place on Saturday, September 19, 2009 12pm-1pm (*light refreshments will be served). All should plan to be in attendance. So please save the date. I'll be there and I hope to see you there to!!!

Registration:
We are currently registering for the upcoming 2009-2010 season. You should have received you player’s registration form in the mail or via email. You may also download registration forms from the web site www.detroithockey.org. (*please attachment)
We are still offering a $25.00 early registration discount now thru September 15, 2009. Please take advantage of the early registration discounts and save yourself some extra cash!!! (*please note fee must be paid in full minus discount) So please don't delay register your player today and save some extra cash!!!!

Fundraiser's:
We will have several fundraiser's to help offset your fees as well as help raise money for the association.
Our first fundraiser for your fees is some of you guys favorite!! That's right it's pizza kit time. We will be selling Little Caesars Pizza kits starting September 14, 2009 thru October 17, 2009. All orders and monies must be turned in to Becki by this date (10/17/2009). The delivery date for the pizza kits is October 24, 2009 @ 2pm. Please remember all pizza kits must be picked up due to there is no space available for storage.
You may pick up pizza kit forms from the arena or contact Becki @ poohbear2273@yahoo.com.

We are also doing something new this year and we really need to get your support. We are doing an advertisement fundraising program where we are soliciting businesses to buy banners or have their logo's placed on the boards of the arena. This is a fundraiser that will help you with your fees as well as raise money for the association to make some upgrades to our arena! Let's get busy trying to get some advertisement from some of the local business we support day to day. Please check your mail for more information on this fundraiser or for more information contact Denise Beaurgard @ femmebelladonna@yahoo.com. If you work for or know of a company that maybe interested in advertising at our arena and investing in our youth please don't hesitate to let us know.

Another fundraiser we need your support on is our Max and Erma's dine to donate which will be held on October 19, 2009 in Livonia. This is an all day event visit Max & Erma's for lunch or dinner and a portion of you bill will be donate back to our association. Please support this to help us keep our fees the lowest in the state and providing equipment for our players.

Please don't forget about our ongoing fundraiser's. Do you have any old cell phones or ink cartridges? If so don't throw those away give them to the DHA to help our organization earn a little extra cash!

Please also check for upcoming emails and your mail boxes for further fundraiser we will be having.

Volunteers:

We need volunteers!!! We can not have a successful season without the help of our wonderful volunteers! Our volunteers are the backbone of this association! We thank you for all your continued support and we are going to need you even more this year. We have a goal to try to reach we would like to get 100 kids in our I-Program we need your help to accomplish this. Please tell your family, friends, neighbors, teachers, barbers, any one you meet about the DHA!!! With your help we are sure to reach this goal!

Detroit Hockey reminders: New season right around the corner

It's almost that time again. That's right hockey time is here! We hope you are as excited as we are about the upcoming 2009-2010 season. I have just a few reminders for you.

Registration:
We are currently registering for the upcoming 2009-2010 season. You should have received you player’s registration form in the mail or via mail. You may also download registration forms from the web site. http://DetroitHockey.org

Some of you have already taken advantage of the early registration discounts. We had a $50.00 discount if you didn't get a chance to take advantage of that don't worry you can still save $25.00 of your fees registration fees now thru September 15, 2009 (*note this has been extended). Please take advantage of the early registration discounts and save yourself some extra cash!!! (*please note fee must be paid in full minus discount)

Hello Everyone,

The Detroit Dragons Mites and Bantoms were recently honored prior to a Detroit Tigers game at Comerica Park. The Mites are pictured above.

Just a few reminders for you. Have a great summer everyone! Hockey season will be here again before you know it.

Registration:
Don't forget if you register your player for next season between now and June 30, 2009 you can save $50.00 for competitive teams (Mite-Midget) and $25.00 for the I-Program. The registration form is available via this link.

Don't worry if you missed this deadline then you can save $25.00 off your registration fees from July 1, 2009 thru September 1, 2009. (*please note in order to receive discount fees must be paid in full by the deadline date) So don't delay and register today and save yourself $50.00.

Upcoming on-site registration dates are August 8th & 21st (at Jack Adams times TBA).

Wings Win & Detroit Hockey Association scores new logo

The Detroit Hockey Association received a new logo to consider on the same day the Detroit Red Wings eliminate the Anaheim Ducks 4-3 in game seven of the Western Conference semifinals. What a great day for Detroit Hockey!

This morning, a TeamHypernet graphics designer delivered this Detroit Hockey brand option for consideration of the Detroit Hockey Association board and membership. If approved, new logo merchandise should be available for purchase by the start of our next hockey season. Please note, this will not replace the Detroit Dragons team logos. It is intended as a logo for the association itself.

The proposed DHA logo is modeled after the big tire & its raised white letters just off I-94 east of Southfield in Allen Park. The unique olde English "D" in the center lets everyone know our home ice is in the city of Detroit, just like the Wings.

We are the Champions Again!! Detroit Dragons Mite B Team Wins LCAHL Smythe Title at Joe Louis Arena 2nd Year in a Row!

This past Sunday morning (3/15/09) the Detroit Dragons Mites defeated Trenton in a hard fought game by a 7-6 score at Joe Louis Arena. The Dragons overcame an early 2-0 deficit in this exciting game to take a 7-5 lead before allowing a sixth goal with approx. 30 seconds to play.

Overcoming adversity is nothing new for this tenacious team of nine players. Their regular season record was 1-15 and they began the playoffs losing to Canton 8-2 and this same Trenton team 7-2. Things did not look good in their third playoff game when they trailed the Wyandotte Warriors 2-0 with 6 1/2 minutes left to play. It was 'do or die' time for this young team. As it turns out, they had plenty of fight left. The Detroit Dragon Mites finally woke up and scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 victory.

They followed this third game victory with a 2-1 win that eliminated Belle Tire and moved them to a semi-finals showdown with the Canton Wings. The 2-1 victory over Canton was the most dominating display of defense the Dragons exhibited all season. They held this high-scoring team to less than ten shots on goal the entire game. This victory set the stage for the championship game.

Congratulations Dragon Mites! You never gave up.

Detroit Dragons Bantam B are 2009's Little Playoff Caesars Champs!!!!

Congrats!!!! Detroit Dragons Bantam B team for your victory on March 7th at the StateFair Gounds in the Little Caesars Playoffs..... This game was very close both teams remain tied until lapeer scored with 1.50 mins left in the 3rd period. and out of nowhere Biggie #15 of the Detroit Dragons scored the victory goal for his team with .02 seconds left in the game.... Way to go Biggs!!!!!

Let's give a huge congratulation to the Bantam and the Mite teams. They both will be playing in the Little Caesar's Amateur Hockey League Championship games. Way to go Dragons!!! The Bantam's game is Saturday, March 7, 2009 @ 10:45am at the State Fair Grounds.
The Mite's game is Sunday, March 15, 2009 @ 8:30am at Joe Louis Arena.

DHA Reminders:
Our season is slowing winding down. Just want to remind everyone we still have ice available through the month of April (*exact end date TBA). That means we still have practices. This time of the season is very important because now during practices our coaches can really work on improving our players fundamental skills and prepare them for possible upcoming Spring leagues and/or for next season. So please take advantage of your ice/practice times!!

The end of the year banquet is scheduled for Sunday, March 29, 2009 at Adam Butzel 4pm-7pm. Tickets will be available on Saturday, March 7, 2009.

DETROIT-- (February 10) — The Detroit Hockey Association will be hosting "Hockey in the Hood 5", an annual youth hockey tournament designed to break down stereotypes and provide a high level of competition for inner-city hockey teams. This year’s tournament will be hosted at the Jack Adams Memorial Arena from February 13-15, 2009.

"The 2009 Hockey in the Hood tournament is our most diverse tournament to date," said Will McCants, Detroit Hockey Association president. "We have teams from Chicago, IL; Columbus, Ohio; Detroit; Minneapolis, MN; Washington, DC; Buffalo, NY; Pittsburgh, PA; Royal Oak, MI; and Wasilla, AK, battling for the Willie O’Ree Championship Trophy. And Mr. O’Ree, the man who broke the color barrier in the National Hockey League - back in 1958 - will be traveling from his home in San Diego to be a part of the festivities."

This year’s program also includes a matchup between the Michigan Sled Dogs and Windsor Ice Bullets, which are coed teams comprised of athletes with a variety disabilities. Sled(ge) Hockey is for people with special needs. The same rules are followed as in ice hockey, with six players on the ice, including a goalie. Players sit on a sled(ge), which is a narrow platform with skate blades attached to the bottom, and propel themselves using two specially constructed hockey sticks that have picks on the end. Players wear full hockey gear and are strapped onto the sledges. The sledges can be specially adapted to meet the needs of each player. The Sled Dogs and Ice Bullets face off at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 14.

Also on Saturday, February 14, the Stanley Cup and Jack Adams trophy will be on display from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Jack Adams Arena. The National Hockey League and Detroit Red Wings have teamed up to bring the Stanley Cup, the greatest trophy in sports, and the Jack Adams trophy, awarded annually by the National Hockey League Broadcasters' Association to the coach judged to have had the most influence in his team's success.

The games will be played at Jack Adams Memorial Arena, 10500 Lyndon, located north of I-96 between Wyoming and Schaefer, and City Sports Center, 3401 E. Lafayette, just West of Mt. Elliott. Admission is free, and games begin on Friday, February 13 at 9:00 a.m.

The Detroit Hockey Association Believes Hockey is for Everyone

The Detroit Hockey Association is a member of the NHL's Hockey is for Everyone initiative.

Hockey is for Everyone provides support and unique programming to non-profit youth hockey organizations across North America that are committed to offering children of all backgrounds opportunities to play hockey. The initiative is supported by NHL member clubs, players, NHL alumni, players and fans. To date, Hockey is for Everyone has exposed close to 45,000 boys and girls to unique hockey experiences.

To celebrate this initiative, the National Hockey League hosts the annual Hockey is for Everyone Month in February. The league-wide initiative includes numerous activities to promote the diversity of the game that involve our clubs, players, alumni, fans, and grass-roots diversity programs, all with the goal of raising awareness and celebrating the growth of the game.

Hockey in the Hood 5 - The Stanley Cup and Jack Adams Tropy visit Jack Adams Arena on Saturday, 2/14/09

The annual Hockey in the Hood tournament breaks down stereotypes and brings diverse inner-city hockey teams together for a tournament that is capped off by the presentation of the Willie O’Ree championship trophy, the Willie O’Cup. O'Ree broke the color barrier as the first black player in the NHL back in 1958.

Hockey in the Hood V (Feb. 13 - 15) will be the most diverse inner-city amateur hockey tournament yet. This year teams from eleven cities including Chicago, IL; Columbus, Ohio; Detroit, MI; Minneapolis, MN; Washington, DC; Buffalo, NY; Pittsburg, PA; Fraser, MI; Royal Oak, MI; Wasilla, AK, and Windsor, Ontario will participate. Our guest of honor, Willie O'Ree will travel from his home in San Diego, CA.

The Detroit Hockey Association will host HITH V at Jack Adams Arena. This year, the NHL has provided a special treat, the Stanley Cup and Jack Adams Trophy will visit Jack Adams Arena around 11:00 AM on Saturday 2/14. Bring out the family to see these historic trophies and enjoy some good hockey. All games are free!

Jack is Back - Dragons Home Ice is Ready for Action!

Hello Everyone,

I have some great news for you all.

At last the ice is up at Jack Adams!!!!! That's right we are back at Jack Adams!!!!!

Starting this Sunday, November 9, 2008 all home games and practices will resume at home (Jack Adams Arena).

We have truly appreciated the use of the Inkster Ice Arena as well as City Sports Arena.

We are truly thankful and grateful to Eddie at Inkster for welcoming us and making Inkster our temporary home while our ice was down.

DHA Day is this Sunday, November 9, 2008: Please come out and show you support to all your favorite Dragon teams. DHA Day is a day filled with hockey. So come and cheer all the Dragon teams on. Games start a 1:00pm until about 7:00pm. I will be there I hope to see you there to!!!:-)

We Need 15-20 Volunteers (*age 18 or older) this Friday.

The Detroit Hockey Association Will Be Participating In A 50/50 Raffle During The Detroit Red Wings Game.

Volunteers will need to be at Joe Louis at 4:30pm. If you are interested in volunteering please contact me ASAP! I need to have a list of who will be volunteering so please contact me. We really need your support so if you can make it let me know.

Due to technical difficulties, we still have no ice at Jack Adams we hope we will real soon, but in the meantime we will continue to have practices in Inkster.

We will be practicing in Inkster again this weekend. Here is the practice schedule for this weekend:

Saturday:
9:00am-10:30am (Mites/Squirts)

Please make sure your player is at these practices. It so important for our players to be at these practices because we will soon be having games. Some of our teams will be having games as early as next week. So we really need you to be at practice!!
We also need many of you to complete your registration paperwork so that we can get the players roster. A roster must be completed before you can play a game so please be at practice this Saturday so we can complete all the neccessary paperwork and make sure our players are ready for their first game.

All players and coaches please be in attendance this weekend!!!

There will be a Coaches Meeting this Saturday, October 4, 2008 @ 12pm in Inkster.
All coaches should be in attendance! We need for all the coaches to complete their coaching paperwork. Some of you have games coming up in the next week and this paperwork must be complete.

Coaches we also need to talk about our plan for the season and our players which should have a strong focus on developing fundamental skills. If we give our players the skills they need they are sure to be a success!

Our ice (Jack Adams Arena) is still down it is tentatively scheduled to be up the first week in October.

We know that we need to have our players on the ice with the season right on us. So we have ice schedule for our players in Inkster at the Inkster Arena. Please see the schedule of times below:

Friday September 26

6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
- Mites/Squirts (6:00-7:20 PM)
- Peewee/Bantam/Midget (7:30-9:00 PM)

Saturday September 27

9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

The Detroit Dragon really need our players to come out to these practices. We are already behind due to our ice not being up yet so we really need our players at these practices. Before you know it we will be having our first games so we need to make sure our players are prepared.

We will be having a parent/player meeting on Saturday, September 27, 2008 @ 10am at the Inkster Arena. Please make a note of this there will be no parent/player meeting at Jack Adams at 12pm this coming Saturday it will be at the Inkster Arena at 10am. Those unable to make it in particular those returning to the I-Program and others that are unable to attend there will be additional parent/player meetings scheduled.

If you have not registered your player yet you may do so this Friday, September 26, 2008 6pm-9pm (*in Inkster during practice times) and Saturday, September 27, 2008 9am-12pm. Player registration for the teams needs to be done as soon as possible because we need to get rosters together for us to start playing games.

Well guess what it's that time again. That's right it's hockey time!!!!!!!!

I hope you are as excited as we are about the upcoming season and you are ready to have a great season! GO DRAGONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you returning to play with the Dragons?
Please email me or call me (Cynthia) to let me know if you will be returning to play with the Dragons for 2008-2009 season. We hope all will return this season.
We really need to know this information so that we can continue to prepare for the upcoming season which is literally around the corner. So please contact me as soon as possible to let me know your plans.

Tentative Start Date:
The ice is tentatively scheduled to be up by September 8, 2008. We will confirm this with you once we definitely know if the ice is up so please look for more information regarding the exact start date and specific practice times.

Registration:
If you have not already registered you are still able to receive an early registration discount until August 31, 2008. If you register by August 31, 2008 you can save $25.00 of your registration fees (all fees minus discount must be paid for the discount to applicable). As of October 1, 2008 regular fees will apply. All fees must be paid by November 2, 2008.

We will have several on-site registration dates:

September 20, 2008 10am-12pm

Are you Interested in your Player's Health???
Some of the coaches have suggested that we start now with teaching our children healthy living. The coaches would like to initiate a off-ice training session for our players it would take place two days per week tentatively on: Saturdays 8:30am-9:45 & Sundays 8:30am- 9:45am. The coaches will go over nutrition, exercise and fitness training. Please contact me if you are interested.

Parent/Player Orientation:
Once again we will be having a player and a parent orientation at the begin of the season. Each parent and player should plan to attend one of the schedule orientations. These orientation will prove to be very informative and give you a head start on what to expect for the upcoming season. Here is a brief synopsis of the information that will be discussed: Rule, Team Rostering, Team Fees, Parent and Player expectations, Volunteering, ABC Center Memberships, Practices and games, Equipment are just of the few things we will discuss.

Akil Adams Summer Hockey Skills Clinics & Stanley is Back in Detroit!

Skills Clinics:
Has Stanley Cup fever hit your household? Does your Detroit Dragon already miss the ice? Do they want to take their game to a new level this season? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, your Dragon should consider attending Coach Akil Adams' summer hockey camp.

Coach Akil Adams is planning to have a two-week long skills clinic this summer. The first clinic is tentatively scheduled to begin the week of June 23, 2008.
This clinic will be held at City Sports arena.

- Bantam/Midgets clinics run from 9:00 AM -1:00 PM.

- I-Program, Mites & Squirts will run from 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

Please note these dates and times are tentative.

The cost for the clinic is $270.00.
Coach Akil needs a count of who will be attending in order to finalize the dates and time for this clinic.

Thus far he has only gotten a few responses. Please contact coach Akil to let him know if your player will be attending. It is very important that he gets a count in order to finalize all the details.

We are the Champions! Detroit Dragons Mites win LCAHL championship at Joe Louis Arena by 5-1 score.

Solid defense, strong skating, and an explosive transition game lead the Detroit Dragons Mites to a 5-1 victory over the Wayne Knights for the Little Caesars Amateur Hockey League (LCAHL) Championship at Joe Louis Arena last evening.

The Dragons struggled early with Wayne applying constant pressure in the Dragons end. The score remained tied 1-1 through much of the second period. However, the skills clinics and hard skating paid off in the end as the Dragons scored four unanswered goals and kept the puck in the opposing end to secure the win.

Congratulations Mites!

Congratulations is also due to the enthusiast Detroit Dragons fans. They overwhelmingly won the traditional LCAHL chicken dance contest between the second and third periods.

Reminder: On Saturday, March 29 @ 10:00 AM, the DHA has a unique opportunity for players, coaches, their families, and supporters to visit the Joe for a Detroit Red Wings open practice!! This will also be an equipment drive for the DHA. This practice is open to the public and each person must either donate a piece of equipment or $5 all proceeds go to our association.

We will need some of our players to be there and collect equipment!! Please send Cynthia an email to let her know that you will be there. We would like to have players from all age levels their from the I-Program, Mites, Squirts, Bantam and Midgets!!. Please email or call me and let me know if you will be there. This is very important we need to let the Red Wings know the number of players and parents who will be there.

LCAHL CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES FAQ

If our final game is at Joe Louis Arena, where should we park? You should park in the player's lot if there is room or in Riverfront parking across the street from the player's lot. There may be a fee for parking in Riverfront parking

If our final game is at Joe Louis Arena, where should we enter the building? Please enter the building through the suite holder's entrance. Teams will be directed to their locker room and fans will be asked to take the elevator or stairs to the viewing areas.

If our final game is at Joe Louis Arena, where should we sit? Fans will be asked to sit only in the designated areas. If you sit outside of these areas, you will be asked to move.

Are cameras allowed at the championship games? Both still and video cameras are allowed at all games. Remember that only rostered coaches and players are allowed on the bench.

Will the concessions be open? Concessions for food and drink (non-alcoholic) will be available at Joe Louis Arena and all venues as applicable. In addition, LCAHL play off wear will be available from Alley Cat at all locations.

What determines the home / away team? Home and away teams are pre-determined based on the original seeding. Please see PointStreak to determine if your team is home or away.

What color does the Home team wear? Home teams are expected to wear white or light color jerseys, visiting teams are expected to wear dark colored jerseys.

Are there any time outs? No time outs are allowed in any games.

Greatings from Columbus & Fantastic Finish to Hockey in the Hood

WOW!!!!! What a wonderful weekend.

The Columbus Ice Hockey Club would like to thank everyone from the Detroit Hockey Association for all their hard work and dedication to this splendid event. It was by our estimation the best HITH tournament ever!!! I'm only sorry that most of the Diversity Clubs were unable to see the two championship games.

Alaska gave Detroit a wonderful game that went to overtime and then shootout! I didn't think it could get any better, but the midget game was one of the best hockey games I've ever seen PERIOD. Speed, teamwork, emotion, effort, sportsmanship, it had everything we as program directors are trying to accomplish with our programs! I'd like to thank all who participated for a truly wonderful weekend and let you all know we in Columbus already miss you all.

The cup was named to honor Willie O'Ree, who began his National Hockey League career in 1958 as the National Hockey League's first black player. Detroit Hockey Spotlight: Akil Adams

This season, the Detroit Hockey Association has been growing. We now have over forty children in the i-Program. Managing this growth, while still delivering individualized, skills based instruction requires more structure and focused coaching. Fortunately, the DHA has several volunteers who act as assistant coaches. The association is also fortunate to have Akil Adams as its lead instruction coach. Akil has been running clinics for all Dragons teams since early October. He has also taken over head coaching responsibilities for the i-Program. Following is a brief bio of Akil Adams.

Akil Adams began his hockey career at Jack Adams Arena at the age of 5. By the time he was 8, he was playing on a AA travel team called then The Detroit Rockies, who won the PAL National Championship in 1984.

Adams then went on to play AAA hockey in the Michigan National organization, where he was invited the USA Olympic Developement Team at age 16 and 17. At the age of 17, he was drafted in the 2nd round of the United States Hockey Leauge (Junior A) league to the Dubuque Fighting Saints.

Akil had a very successful year in the USHL where he was an All-Star, 2nd team all league and received a full scholarship to the University of North Dakota where he played two seasons before joining the Windsor Spitfires of the O.H.L. There he played with Ed Jovanowski of the Pheonix Coyotes before being traded to the Ottawa 67's.

At Ottawa, Adams played with the likes of Michael Peca (Columbus Blue Jackets), Sean Donovan (Calgary Flames), Kevin Weekes (New Jersey Devils), Alyn McCauley (Toronto Maple Leafs) and was coached by Brian Kilrea (NHL Hockey Hall of Fame). In 1994 Akil signed a contract with the Florida Panthers American League team the Carolina Monarchs.

He then went on to play in Germany, the International Hockey League, the Western Professional League, the United Hockey League, and finished his playing career in 2000.

Akil earned his BA in Communications from Wayne State University when he finished his career. Adams went on to be the 1st African American High School Hockey Coach in the State of Michigan at the prestigous University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe. He also ran the instructional program for the Grosse Pointe Hockey Association for three years.

Akil Adams headed up All Pro Hockey School for five years, before joining the Belle Tire AAA hockey organization as a coach, consultant and trainer. Yet, he finds greater satisfaction helping to grow the DHA. "My whole goal is to provide the kids from the inner-city with the training that I was not fortunate to have. I am passionate and dedicated to providing the infastructure essential to giving these kids the opportunity to go alot further than I ever did. Its good to be home."

General Membership Meeting:
There will be a general membership meeting this Sunday December 16, 2007 at 3 PM all members of the Detroit Hockey Association should plan to be in attendance. There will be very important information discussed as well as updates on upcoming events i.e. HITH 4. Light refreshments will be served. I will be there I hope that you will be there to!!

Mandatory Akil Adams Skills Clinic:
Please remember that the skill clinics are mandatory!! Many of our players have not been taking advantage of these clinics those who have we have seen tremendous improvements. Please ensure that your player is getting the skills they need by making sure they attend the mandatory clinics as well as their scheduled practices!!

DHA Christmas Potluck/Party:
If you have not heard the Detroit Hockey Association will be having a Christmas potluck on Monday, December 17, 2007 6 PM-9 PM. It's that time again, the Detroit Dragons are back on the ice. If you plan to play this season haven't registered yet please do so ASAP. All teams are having mandatory skills clinics for the next 3-4 weeks. All players at all levels must be in attendance!! Each player must show up for their scheduled clinic time. These clinics are designed specifically to prepare Detroit Dragons players for the upcoming season. If you want to play and have a good season this year, you will be there!

DHA to Host USA Hockey Level 1 Clinic 10/13 & Important Dates

As the DHA continues to grow, there will be an increasing need for new coaches. The DHA will host a Level I coaching certification program at Jack Adams Arena on Saturday, October 13th from 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM. Register online via this link. Parents and care givers are strongly encouraged to get certified and learn the latest USA Hockey coaching techniques. No special skills or experience are required.

Soon new players will be signing up for the i-Program and Detroit Dragon teams. There is a great need for volunteers to help us prepare for the season and all season long. The DHA kicks off the pre-season this coming Saturday.

Saturday, September 15, 2007: To help clean out the equipment cage. We will be cleaning the cage out from 9 am-11 am. We need some volunteers to help us get the cage area cleaned out and organized.

Coaches Meeting - 9/15 - 11:00 AM: It is mandatory for all coaches who plan to coach this season to be in attendance. The DHA needs active participation in order to have a successful season.

Parent/Player Orientation - 9/15 - 2:00 PM: Please remember that each parent and player must attend an orientation session. There will be others scheduled if you are unable to attend this one (see the following dates).

A recent USA Today title read Big City Schools Struggle with graduation rates . This comes as no surprise. Sadly, it is also no surprise that Detroit won the infamous "worst of the worst" award by a landslide.

Detroit schools graduated only 21.7% of their high school students! Baltimore was 2nd worst. Yet they did managed to graduate 38.5% of their students.

The Detroit Hockey Association is a great success story when it comes to graduation rates in Detroit! In marked contrast to the depressing overall Detroit record, all Detroit Hockey Association players graduate from high school and most go on to college. An academic focus is built-in. The DHA requires its players to share their GPA when they sign up. The program works. It is based on a simple slogan, "where goals are achieved, not just scored."

Any parents interested in helping improve their child's chances of graduating from high school in Metro Detroit should give Detroit Hockey a try. Families need to know that DHA sponsors help ensure the program will continue to deliver the best hockey value in Metro Detroit.

Due to our generous sponsors, the Detroit Hockey Association has not only reduced fees, the DHA is offering a chance for a $25.00 registration discount through August 31, 2007. (*all fees must be paid for the discount to be applied) Please remember regular fees will apply as of September 1, 2007.

Early Registration Discounts & Meeting Announcements

I hope everyone is enjoying the warm weather. I just want to remind you of the early registration discounts that are available. The registration fee for the 2007-2008 season is $300 for house programs and only $150 for the I-Program.

There is a $50.00 (* for house registration) early registration discount for those who register by June 30, 2007. There will also be a additional early registration discount for the house team for those who miss the June 30, 2007 deadline of $25.00 offered July 1, 2007-August 31, 2007.

The I-Program early registration discount is $25.00 now through August 31, 2007. All fees must be paid in full to receive the discount. Please check your mail for your application. As of September 1, 2007 regular fees will apply. So don't delay register today and save yourself some extra $$$!

Volunteers Needed!!
The Detroit Hockey Association wants to show that our Dragon's have community spirit. We are scheduled to go to Gleaners Food Bank on Saturday, June 23, 2007 from 9 AM-12 PM to pack food for the homeless. We need at least 10 people to volunteer to do this. We need to know ASAP who is interested in participating. I need to confirm with Gleaners ASAP if we will have enough volunteer support. So please contact me if you would like to participate.

We are coming to the end of another very exciting season. Let's congratulate the Bantam's for winning the Little Caesar's Bantam B Tier III championship! Way to go Dragons!!!

Parents and players we are still practicing. There will be some changes to the schedule that will be announced and there will be some skills clinics offered please have your player attend. Let's start working on having an even better upcoming season. Remember practice makes perfect and that's what we are planning for next season.

March 23, 2007, (Friday): Don't forget this is an election year. You may nominate yourself or someone else for one of the (9) board positions. (President, Vice President, Director of Teams, Treasurer, Secretary, Assistant Secretary/Treasurer, (2) At Large Members and President Emeritus (*this position is only needed if a knew president is elected).

All Detroit Hockey Association board nomination forms must be submitted by this date to ensure that ballots are made for election. Hello everyone! The season is just about over. This year is an election year. The election will take place at our annual awards banquet, which is schedule for April 1, 2007. If you are interested in running for a position on the Detroit Hockey Association board you may nominate yourself or if there is someone you would like to nominate for a particular position you may nominate them. Please remember the person you nominate must accept or decline to run for the position. There will be nomination forms as well as a box to place your nomination form into. These boxes will be located at the concession stand and also at the DHA information board located near the pro-shop.

There a re a total of 9 positions to run for on the Detroit Hockey Association board. The positions that you may run for are: President, Vice President, Director of Teams, Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Secretary/Treasurer, (2) At Large Members and President Emeritus (*this position is only needed if a new president is elected). You may find a copy of the various positions and the responsibilities of those positions according to the Detroit Hockey Associations by-laws posted at the DHA information board. You may also find this at the Detroit Hockey Association web-site
(www.detroithockey.org).

The individuals that are nominated will then be place on a ballot. These ballots will be presented to the general membership at the awards banquet and there will be a vote. The votes will then be counted and the winners announced. The winners of the election will maintain their particular positions for two years until the next election.
*Please note that current Detroit Hockey Association board members may be re-elected or may maintain their positions if no one is elected to their current position.

So if you would like to run or know someone you think would be a good candidate place your nominations. All nomination forms are due by March 20, 2007 to ensure that we can have ballots made and available for the banquet on April 1, 2007.

WASHINGTON -- You typically wouldn't look in southeast Washington for young hockey stars, but because of the dedication of one man, the Fort Dupont hockey team is about to head to Detroit for a major national tournament.

Coach Neal Henderson, a pioneer black hockey player, has an infectious passion for hockey, News4's James Adams reported.

"The Detroit Hockey Assocation, in conjunction with the Red Wings, hosted the third annual Hockey In The Hood tournament this weekend at the Jack Adams Memorial Arena.

The tournament featured 15 teams from around the country, including squads from Boston, Buffalo, Chicago, Columbus, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, Washington DC, Wayne, MI and the Detroit-based Clark Park program.

Willie O'Ree, the first African American to play in the National Hockey League was in town to participate in the festivities and award the "Willie O'Cup" to the tournament champion.

The Detroit Hockey Association is an amateur, nonprofit youth ice hockey organization providing competitive ice hockey programs for the developed and the developing player. Visit the DHA's Web site at DetroitHockey.org."

Hockey in the Hood III - Great Hockey and the Stanley Cup

The Detroit Hockey Association will be hosting Hockey in the Hood III (HITH III) at Jack Adams Arena in Detroit from Friday, February 16th through Sunday the 18th. HITH III will be the biggest, most diverse amateur Hockey Tournament yet. This year two programs from Detroit (the host Dragons) and Southwest Detroit's Clark Park will compete with teams from Atlantic City, NJ - Boston, MA - Columbus, OH - Pittsburgh, PA - Washington, DC. - and - Wayne, MI.

Games will be played on Friday the 16th beginning at 6:00 PM, on Saturday from 7:00 AM until 5:30 PM. Tournament Champion games will be played on Sunday. The Squirt/Pee Wee game will be played at 12:00 PM. Pee Wee/Bantam leaders will face off at 1:00 PM. HITH III will wrap up with the Midget championship game at 2:00 PM. These games will be followed by the closing ceremony.

The hockey games will not be the only attractions during the HITH III weekend. The Stanley Cup will be visiting the Jack Adams Arena on Friday from 4:00 PM - 9:00 PM. In honor of Black History Month, a video highlighting the career of Willie O'Ree - the first Black player in the NHL - will be shown throughout the tournament.

The Detroit Hockey Association thanks the players, their families, coaches, volunteers, and sponsors. Special appreciation and recognition goes to the Detroit Red Wings Foundation. The Red Wings and Ilitch Charities for Children are the major sponsors of this unique event.
