The annual Hockey in the Hood tournament breaks down stereotypes and brings diverse inner-city hockey teams together for a tournament that is capped off by the presentation of the Willie O’Ree championship trophy, the Willie O’Cup. O'Ree broke the color barrier as the first black player in the NHL back in 1958.Hockey in the Hood V (Feb. 13 - 15) will be the most diverse inner-city amateur hockey tournament yet. This year teams from eleven cities including Chicago, IL; Columbus, Ohio; Detroit, MI; Minneapolis, MN; Washington, DC; Buffalo, NY; Pittsburg, PA; Fraser, MI; Royal Oak, MI; Wasilla, AK, and Windsor, Ontario will participate. Our guest of honor, Willie O'Ree will travel from his home in San Diego, CA.
The Detroit Hockey Association will host HITH V at Jack Adams Arena. This year, the NHL has provided a special treat, the Stanley Cup and Jack Adams Trophy will visit Jack Adams Arena around 11:00 AM on Saturday 2/14. Bring out the family to see these historic trophies and enjoy some good hockey. All games are free!
